CAN'T WAIT
I am a wannabe freelance journalist who is trying to stand firm on the ground as a Learner of English - this fine choice of mode of introduction was courtesy of Jeeves! Not only am I a TRYING freelance writer in the realms of interior, art, architecture, theatre and food but also a TRYING learner of (British) English. Part of the reasons for this is that I spent part of my teens in the UK and was thereby fascinated in the many ways of everything British including its language.
In my late twenties, my determination to write in English about something Korean (at least from the South) sprang up and grew amid the editorial team for Space magazine, South Korea's own architectural "cultural property" launched in 1966. My job there mainly concerned the English language as the periodical doubled in its tongues Korean and English. I couldn't help thinking there is a big room for improvement in the language area in South Korea, so I quit my job in the editorial team and went off to England to London School of Journalism to study postgraduate course, which is a thing very much alive and very current in the global media. (Luckily Space magazine nowadays works with a savvy graduate from Royal College of Art to oversee the English part.)
As for me, I went and wandered (relatively) far and away before I cast anchor in the five of many ports of genre journalism - food, theatre, art, interior design and architecture. About the last item I learned as craft in the aforesaid specialized magazine company. As for interior design, it was a big thing touching interior for me, growing up in my home with my mum stacking up Korean interior magazines to look sometime at houses and photos of model interior design works. Eye opening to me forward to 2023 when I found coral, pink, celadon and red and white just about anywhere people want them to be.
Besides, I want to share here a lot more things that I found beautiful and extraordinary growing up in South Korea. Enjoy the ride!
*Since I wrote this article, I dropped food and inserted "interview" as a member of my specialities. Heavenly veggie food seemed like something too far away, while a professional journalist deigned to say that the selection of interviews of whomever I set in my scene is really my strong point.
