Obituary Presents - Verse 1

Nowinlove 2021. 2. 21. 12:11

Born in 1932 and passed away aged Feb 15th 2021, Paik Ki-wan was more than an activist for the repressed and the resistance. He had close relationship with words, and was also an author and poet.

His endeavour as an activist got him to already and always be there up front in protests, but as said above, there is a lesser known fact; he crafted the Korean language beautifully and coined several new words actively and fruitfully used by the youth, such as saenaegi(newbie, freshman), dong-ari(university club), mokkoji(gathering) and daldongne(poor hillside houses)

His words were tried in a puzzle by Hwang, Sok-yong, a renowned author and novelist, to create a moving lyrics for March For The Beloved, which went on to be sung countless times.

Google the English name of the song March For The Beloved and near the top you can find the official lyrics in English at Korea Herald. The Verse 1 in English is fetching, but for full effect you have to gasp the meanings of words in their full flower blossom.
